Oh, the Changes that are happening

I’m currently learning how to use Movable Type 4 (MT).

This web site is mostly built in Textpattern—which is tried and true, and something I know how to use. Movable Type 4, on the other hand, is brand new. It’s so new that even the MT community is still learning how to use it. So there’s not a whole lot of help for me.

I keep trying to consult their forums, but most people there are fully deployed on the old version of MT, and the old help doesn’t necessarily work for the version.

The point is. This site (fredsweb.net) is undergoing some weird chages, the blog section is actually MT, while everything elce is Textpattern.

I decided to try MT because my domain host, Pair Networks, Inc. is a preferred MT service provider—or some such thing—and I wanted to get something easier for my users to “figure out”.

So far I have to say that Textpattern is more flexible, on the design side of things. But Movable Type is more ready to go out of the box. Textpattern is simpler, but with its simplicity it requires more work, MT lets you just run with it.

I have no idea how either compare with Wordpress, sorry. I don’t use it.

What's that Font?

That fancy font I used on the banner(s) and section headings is Hill House. Bassed on the handwriting of architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

The Font was designed by Jon Hicks and is available here on his website.

About Fred's Web

This is my modest attempt to offer web hosting and design services to those in my community. I focus on individuals and small companies, who need or want a web site but can’t do it themselves or they don’t have time. Fortunately there are many in that category.

This site is under almost constant change as I experiment with different styles, fonts, layouts, and technologies. Of course if you’re looking for web design and hosting, you probably don’t care about the the back end—you just want it to look good.
