I’m currently learning how to use Movable Type 4 (MT).

This web site is mostly built in Textpattern—which is tried and true, and something I know how to use. Movable Type 4, on the other hand, is brand new. It’s so new that even the MT community is still learning how to use it. So there’s not a whole lot of help for me.

I keep trying to consult their forums, but most people there are fully deployed on the old version of MT, and the old help doesn’t necessarily work for the version.

The point is. This site (fredsweb.net) is undergoing some weird chages, the blog section is actually MT, while everything elce is Textpattern.

I decided to try MT because my domain host, Pair Networks, Inc. is a preferred MT service provider—or some such thing—and I wanted to get something easier for my users to “figure out”.

So far I have to say that Textpattern is more flexible, on the design side of things. But Movable Type is more ready to go out of the box. Textpattern is simpler, but with its simplicity it requires more work, MT lets you just run with it.

I have no idea how either compare with Wordpress, sorry. I don’t use it.

Here are your mp3 examples.

Most MP3s, i.e. the downloadable music type, are 128 bit rate. That provides sufficient quality for music for most people, on most sound reproduction equipment. Audiophiles tend NOT to like this bit rate because the compression removes too much of the musical information.

The Audio files (not to be confused with “audiophile”) of Fr. Dickson’s surmons are 256 bits. Which is very nice indeed. This is essentially CD quality. Unfortunately it’s also HUGE.

For spoken text/podcasts, substatially lower bit rates may be used, resulting in substatially smaller files. This is essential, in that St. Andrews will eventully have to start paying high internet hosting rates if too much storage or bandwidth get used for surmons.

If you want to hear the original audio files you know where to find it. For the following examples I also increased the volume a little. Now for my examples.

The first example is a 64 bit version. This actually sounds very good, and retains a lot of exceedingly high fidelity of the original version, at 1/4 the size

64 bit, 9MB

Now for something completely different. Here’s a low resolution version of the same thing. The quality certainly isn’t there, but remember this is the spoken word, and the file is only 2.8MB in size!

19bit, 2.8MB

And finally something inbetween

35bit, 5MB
